“INSPIRING EACH OTHER TO EXCELLENCE, GUIDED BY THE LIGHT OF CHRIST’’
WHAT DO WE DO?
Governors are volunteers who willingly give of their time to work with the children, parents, staff and the wider school community to promote a culture of inspiring excellence in our children within a happy, caring and secure learning environment. Governors possess a wide range of high calibre skills as well as individual areas of expertise. We utilise our collective knowledge and skills effectively to carry out our core responsibilities in a professional manner. Governors are also committed to preserving the school’s Catholic identity and promoting British values.
The Chair of Governors has regular meetings with the Head Teacher, and each term Governors meet on the Staffing and Resources Committee, Curriculum and School Improvement Committee, and the full Governing Board. The purpose of these meetings is to allow an opportunity for Governors to review progress on the School Development Plan and ask questions about the Head Teacher’s report which includes aspects of the children’s performance and outcomes. We also make certain that money is being well spent.
Each Governor visits their nominated link class on a regular basis and keeps a record of their visit. We now link with the same group of children throughout their time in the school. In this way we get to know the children as they learn and develop.
Each term Governors come together in school for a school monitoring day. Along with the senior leadership team, we agree in advance a specific focus for the day, and keep a written record of the visit.
As we consider the children’s voice is very important, Governors meet with the School Council and School Chaplains each half term to hear first-hand whether they are happy and feel secure in school, and how their teachers help them achieve their targets. We also ask the children about behaviour, whether there have been any aspects of improvements in school, and how they think their school could be improved further. In addition, we seek their views about sports and extra-curricular activities. Governors occasionally have lunch with the children and also go into in the playground at playtime.
In order to keep abreast of developments relating to our core responsibilities, Governors regularly attend training sessions and briefings run by the Local Authority and the Diocese. We regularly review our own effectiveness and stay focused on school development and improvement to ensure we keep the children at the heart of all that we do.
